Good books on language and grammer?

I was looking up the proper usage of colons, and found in the article something about apposition, which I had never heard of before. Searching deeper to grasp the concept, instead of getting a clear view I found more and more new ones being thrown at me. Talk about reverse engineering.





Is there a good all purpose book to introduce some of the more advanced rules and concepts of English, but without going too far over a novice's head? I don't mind reverse engineer a little, but I don't want to be trying to extract Ohm's law from a lightening bolt.
